Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has swept aside Alexander Zverev in their second round match at the Canadian Open 2023 (National Bank Open). The Spaniard has sealed it 6-1, 6-2.
In the first set, Davidovich started dominating the match thanks to an early break when he was 0-1 ahead of Zverev. The Spaniard managed to break the German's serve with a break of serve, and immediately after he confirmed the break with the 0-3. The Spaniard produced another blow to the German making it 1-4, accumulating another break to get 1-5 and with the possibility of closing the first set with his serve, which he was going to get without many problems.
Up to this point, it was torture for Alexander Zverev. The Spaniard had won 87% of the points with his first serve. In addition, he had accumulated seven winners and only one unforced error. The German, meanwhile, was offering nothing, as he had won only four of his 11 points with his first serve (36%) and none! of the seven he played with his second serve (0%). All this in addition to only two winners and four unforced errors.
In the second set things had to change drastically for Zverev if he wanted to turn the situation around. However, Davidovich would not take long to regain the lead. At 1-1, the Spanish player managed to break the German's serve and then confirm the break by taking a 1-3 lead. The situation was not going to change, and with another break at 2-4, Davidovich-Fokina closed the match with his serve for 2-6 in the second set.
