defeated Argentinean Tomás Etcheverry in 3 sets and will play against Spanish
player Pablo Carreño Busta in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open Indian
Wells.
Former
world No. 1 continues with a promising start to the season, which has him
competing at a high level in the tournaments he has played. He proved it in the
Australian Open with marathon victories over Kokkinakis and Berretini, and in
Doha he reached the final, where he lost against the Russian Daniil Medvedev,
who is going through a streak of 14 matches in a row.
Tomás
Etcheverry played the South American tournaments in recent weeks, where he play
the ATP Santiago final, falling to the Chilean Nicolás Jarry. The 23-year-old
Argentine has made the leap from the challengers to the ATP tournaments
achieving some good results that have him as world No. 61.
Etcheverry
got the first break in the sixth game of the first set, but Murray immediately
returned the break, and they continued to hold serve until the tie-break, where
the Argentine grew stronger and took the lead over the 3-time Grand Slam
champion by 7-6(5). The second
set Murray took advantage of his rival's mistakes and got two breaks that gave
him the set 6-1 to extend the match, showing a higher level than Etcheverry
The final
part of the match had both players fighting in each game, but Murray brought
out his hierarchy and broke at a key moment in the ninth game. With this, the
Briton kept his serve and won the match 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. In the second round, his
opponent will be the fifteenth seeded Pablo Carreño Busta.
