Andy Murray defeated the Argentinean player Tomás Etcheverry in three sets and will play against Spanish player Pablo Carreño Busta in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells.
The former world No. 1 continues with a promising start to the season, competing at a high level in the tournaments he has played. He proved it in the Australian Open with marathon victories over Kokkinakis and Berretini. In Doha, he reached the final, where he lost against the Russian Daniil Medvedev, who is currently on a 14-match winning streak.
Tomás Etcheverry played in the South American tournaments in recent weeks, where he reached the ATP Santiago final but lost to the Chilean Nicolás Jarry. The 23-year-old Argentine has made the leap from the challengers to the ATP tournaments, achieving some good results that have him ranked as world No. 61.
Etcheverry got the first break in the sixth game of the first set, but Murray immediately returned the break, and they continued to hold serve until the tie-break. In the tie-break, the Argentine grew stronger and took the lead over the three-time Grand Slam champion by 7-6(5). In the second set, Murray took advantage of his rival's mistakes and got two breaks, which gave him the set 6-1, extending the match and showing a higher level than Etcheverry.
The final part of the match had both players fighting in each game, but Murray brought out his superiority and broke at a key moment in the ninth game. With this, the Briton held his serve and won the match 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. In the second round, his opponent will be the fifteenth seed, Pablo Carreño Busta.
