Remember the name, Lorenzo Musetti. The 18-year-old has claimed his first ATP Tour Level win in stunning fashion dispatching Stan Wawrinka in a 6-0, 7-6 victory to conclude proceedings on Tuesday at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia Rome.
Musetti smashed through the first set 6-0 in just 24 minutes giving fans of Wawrinka early fears that the Number 10 seed in Rome would be heading out.
This included breaks at 1-0, 3-0 and 5-0 with the the one at 5-0 in particular only seeing one break point with the game going back and forth between the players; but it was one Musetti claimed.
The second set was a lot better from Wawrinka despite him going 3-1 down to the Italian early on. An important break at 3-3 saw him in the ascendancy; and he looked most likely to potentially send it all the way.
But Musetti despite some erratic moments kept his cool to produce some moments of brilliance in the latter half of the match to stay with Wawrinka; and ultimately keep up his pursuit for the match.
The last game to force the tiebreak in particular saw some masterful serving; and his confidence was there for the tiebreak which he claimed on his second match point for a win which will send shockwaves around the tennis world.
Before Wawrinka,
Milos Raonic made his way through to the second round in a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Adrian Mannarino in just under two hours. As expected from the Canadian; a lot of aces were struck with 12 in total. His 1st serve points won stood at 94% while his 2nd serve was at 63%.
He didn't face a break point all game and converted 2/5 of his own; and after a good display in New York at the Western & Southern Open; he will aim to take that into Rome and Roland Garros to come.
