It was a battle between two players who are known as classy operators on the clay courts with Stephens reaching the second Grand Slam of her career at Roland Garros; while Muguruza claimed victory in Paris in 2016.
While Stephens has regressed in terms of form since then, Muguruza since teaming up with Conchita Martinez during the off-season reached at least the Quarter-Finals or better during the first five tournaments of their partnership.
A rainy Tuesday evening nearly derailed her progress in Rome; but she hit 22 winners and broke Stephens four times to claim it in straight sets. She will now face off against Coco Gauff after she saw off Ons Jabeur in straight sets.
