Simone
Tartarini,
Lorenzo Musetti's coach, doesn’t believe that
Carlos Alcaraz can
defeat
Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.
The world
No. 2, Novak Djokovic, will be playing his only grass-court tournament of the
season at Wimbledon in 2023. After winning the French Open, 'Nole' decided to
stay away from competition and will arrive directly at the third Grand Slam of
the year. Djokovic has been the champion of the last four editions of Wimbledon
and has not lost at the tournament since 2017, when he was defeated by Tomas
Berdych in the quarterfinals.
The Serbian
player arrives as a 7-time champion, and if he were to win, he could equal
Roger Federer's record of eight Wimbledon titles, the most in men's singles.
"Djokovic favorite? Absolutely yes, after all, he has won the tournament
seven times and he comes from success in Paris. So, he's definitely the player
to beat," Tartarini said, as per Tennis Fever.
The first
seed will be Carlos Alcaraz, who reclaimed the top spot in the ATP rankings
this week after winning the Queen's Club Championships by defeating Alex de
Minaur in the final, securing his 11th career title.
"Alcaraz
is a Martian and has an incredible ability to adapt. He is certainly not a
'herbivore,' but the more he plays, the more he improves," Tartarini said.
Although
Alcaraz has had limited experience on grass during his career, his victory at
Queen's demonstrated that he can perform well on this surface and have a strong
Wimbledon campaign. He has previously made two appearances at the All England
Club, reaching the second round in 2021 (defeat against Daniil Medvedev) and
the fourth round in 2022 (defeat against Jannik Sinner).
"I
don't think he can beat Nole if they meet in the Wimbledon final, but we'll
see," Tartarini concluded.
Meanwhile,
Lorenzo Musetti, under Tartarini's guidance, prepared for Wimbledon at the
Stuttgart Open and the Queen's Club Championship, reaching the quarterfinals in
both tournaments with defeats against Frances Tiafoe and Holger Rune,
respectively.
