Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic has revealed that his ‘greatest’ desire for the remainder of
this year is to win the
Davis Cup.
The quarterfinals of the
competition is set to be scheduled in the last few days of November where eight
teams will participate to secure the ultimate prize.
Serbia are set to face off against
Great Britian in a mouthwatering quarterfinal on November 23.
Djokovic, while recently talking
to Eurosport, expressed his desire to win the Davis Cup this year.
“My greatest desire is to win the
Davis Cup,” he said. “I hope to end 2023 fit, healthy, as World #1, and winning
at least one title.”
Djokovic is often renowned as the
greatest player in the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having
won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles.
His most recent victory came in
New York last month where he defeated current world number three Russia’s Daniil
Medvedev in the final with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
With that victory, Djokovic ended
the year with three Grand Slam titles in his name. He first clinched the
Australian Open after defeating Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final with a
score of 6–3, 7–6(7–4), 7–6(7–5).
Later on, he also won the French
Open after defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud in the final with a score of 7–6(7–1),
6–3, 7–5.
Djokovic’s only defeat this year
in the Grand Slams came in the final of Wimbledon where he lost to Spain’s
young sensation Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thrilling contest with a score of 1–6,
7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
He will now turn his attention
towards the Australian Open which is his most successful competition where he has
lifted the title 10 times — most in the tournament’s history.
