"Normally for me at my age, I don’t play players younger than me": Surprise factor for Leylah Fernandez in Hong Kong Open run

Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez has seen her journey to the semifinals at the 2023 Hong Kong Open go through two teenagers, a feat the 21-year old doesn't encounter much on tour.

The Montreal native defeated 18-year old Linda Fruhvirtova in the quarterfinals, securing a 7-6(2) 6-2 over the Czech youngster. The previous round saw Fernandez battle bast rising star Mirra Andreeva, as the 2021 US Open runner-up rallied from a set down to defeat the 16-year old.

Fernandez not used to being the older player on the court

"Normally for me at my age, I don’t play players younger than me," she admitted. "That’s 2 rounds in a row that I’ve played younger players... I’m just happy I was able to fight. I think it was all thanks to the fans."

Nonetheless, the streak will end at two games, as Fernandez faces 25-year old Anna Blinkova for a spot in the final.
