Leylah Fernandez has seen her journey to the semifinals at the 2023
Hong Kong Open go through two teenagers, a feat the 21-year old doesn't encounter much on tour.
The Montreal native defeated 18-year old Linda Fruhvirtova in the quarterfinals, securing a 7-6(2) 6-2 over the Czech youngster. The previous round saw Fernandez battle bast rising star Mirra Andreeva, as the 2021 US Open runner-up rallied from a set down to defeat the 16-year old.
Fernandez not used to being the older player on the court
"Normally for me at my age, I don’t play players younger than me," she admitted. "That’s 2 rounds in a row that I’ve played younger players... I’m just happy I was able to fight. I think it was all thanks to the fans."
Nonetheless, the streak will end at two games, as Fernandez faces 25-year old Anna Blinkova for a spot in the final.
