Although he was unable to defend his
Australian Open title,
Novak Djokovic admitted to his family being divided on the outcome of the men's final at Melbourne Park.
Rafael Nadal defeated
Daniil Medvedev to win his 21st Grand Slam title, leapfrogging Djokovic to hold the record with the most singles Grand Slam titles in the Open Era. However, the Serbian disclosed that there was a difference in opinions when it came to backing a winner during the final.
"I found it so difficult to watch," Djokovic said in an interview with BBC. “I was very neutral, I didn’t cheer for anyone because I wanted to be there so badly. But I was amused by the circumstances.
“My wife was cheering for Medvedev, my son was cheering for Nadal and every point that Rafa would make, Stefan would be jumping around."
The 20-time Grand Slam champion also shared a humorous conversation he had with his son Stefan earlier this week.
“He (Stefan) asked me a few days ago when I was putting him to sleep: ‘When is the next tournament that you are going to participate and play where Rafa is going to be also?’" recalled Djokovic.
“I said: ‘I’m not sure, I hope very soon, why are you asking me that?'”
To which Djokovic Jr. replied “because I would really love to take a photo with Rafa!”
“We’ll arrange that, I’m sure,” Djokovic jokingly ended.
