Rafael Nadal started off his Nitto ATP Finals campaign off with an impressive victory over Rublev and after the match, he called it an important step.
Rafael Nadal started off his ATP Finals campaign with an impressive victory over Andrey Rublev whom he defeated 6-3 6-4. The Russian looked very nervous in the match never being able to get things going and that suited Nadal who won with ease. After the match he said:
"It's important to start well, of course, for the confidence, because winning [in] straight sets helps. The serve tonight was very important. I played solidly with my serve. I didn't suffer much, and that helps [me] to play more relaxed on the return. That's what I did."
Speaking about the match aproach Nadal highlighted his hapiness with the way he did:
"[I'm] happy the way I approached the match. The first match is always difficult, and Andrey played an amazing season," Nadal said. "He's a great guy, too, so I wish him all the very best."
Nadal will continue his ATP Finals on Tuesday when he will play his next match. He will need to raise his level because it's hard to imagine his next opponent will repeat the struggles of Rublev. Be sure to check out our live scores page where you will be able to follow all of that.
