Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova are through to the Miami Open R3 following victories on Friday over Tomljanovic and Zheng.
Naomi Osaka stepped onto the Miami courts on Friday to play her first match since winning the Australian Open. As was expected there were some signs of rust in the American's game as Tomljanovic took an early break which she held till 5-4. When she needed to close out it with her serve, Osaka was able to carve out three break points eventually tying it at 5-5.
From there she went on to play much better eventually winning in the tiebreak 7-3. In the 2nd set, she continued to play good enough to hold her serve. Tomljanovic would have chances early on but Osaka held on while the Australian saved a couple of break points later in the set.
At 4-4 Osaka finally found a way to break Tomljanovic's serve taking a 5-4 lead before ending the match with a strong service game 6-4. All in all, a solid showing from Osaka despite showing signs of rust early on. After settling in she had no issue in defeating a very solid Australian.
Joining her in the next round will be Karolina Pliskova who had no issues whatsoever in her match against Zhang. The Czech player did not enter this event in good form but she cruised to a rather easy victory. Dominant on her own serve with strong baseline play it took her only 74 minutes to close it out 6-2 6-1.
