Former world number one
Jimmy Connors has advised the current
world number eight Denmark’s
Holger Rune to never apologise for showing
emotions.
The 20-year-old is being criticised by some social media
fans in particular for showing too many emotions during the match. Connors,
who won eight Grand Slam titles in his illustrious career, was recently quoted in
a report where he advises Rune to never apologise for showing emotions.
"I’m gonna say this, never apologize for showing your
emotions and being an emotional player,” said the 71-year-old. “You know, I
always felt that I used that emotion to help drive me
"As long as you are emotional, like my friend Ilie
Nastase, he would get emotional but he would still be emotional five games
later. That doesn’t work. I am very energetic and when you play with a lot of
energy, you sometimes show too much emotion but again, it’s a part of the game.”
Rune has had a difficult year at the highest level but finished
the season on a bit of a high after managing to qualify for the ATP Finals in
Turin. However, his journey in the competition came to an end as he suffered two
defeats in three matches in the group stage.
