Rafael Nadal's return to tennis abruptly ended due to injury at the Brisbane International after a micro tear in his thigh muscle and he subsequently withdrew from the 2024 Australian Open. But on his return home to Spain, it seems his lay off won't be as long as expected.
Some optimism from the Nadal camp sees a potential return within the next week to training likely with either a late wildcard to South American clay or the Middle East swing potentially next month if he doesn't decide to postpone until Indian Wells and Miami.
Nadal flew back to Spain and visited Dr. Angel Ruiz Cotorro in Madrid and according to publication, Diario de Mallorca intends to rest for a week before returning to training to get ready for the remainder of the season. This shows that in reality, the injury is not as serious as his withdrawal from the Australian Open potentially showed.
Craig Tiley in particular this week said that he believed Nadal would return to Melbourne in 2025, but as many have seen, it is likely his final year which started well but got curtailed due to injury and given how quickly it has reared its head, he may rethink also his full 2024 calendar with Nadal initially set to play a lot of tournaments in his comeback to the tour.
But it will likely be confirmed after next week what his next move is depending on his return to training. Good news though for Nadal fans that he will return to the court quicker than perhaps expected.
