Jannik Sinner will face a potential mouthwatering clash with Carlos Alcaraz or Stefanos Tsitispas in the semi-finals of the 2024
French Open during a day where he is now confirmed to be the new World No.1.
He defeated
Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 to reach the semi-finals with his opponent set to be confirmed during the Night Session on Tuesday evening. But also he has officially dethroned Novak Djokovic as World No.1 and will ascend to the top of tennis as the 29th ATP World No.1 on June 10.
The second seed wouldn't have known about this news when he was playing on court with Novak Djokovic withdrawing whilst the Italian was on court. He has a meniscus tear in his right knee after an MRI. He battled past Francisco Cerundolo yesterday but complained about a knee problem which had been exacerbated during the tie. But now he loses his top spot with a withdrawal as Sinner achieves destiny.
He defeated Grigor Dimitrov in just over two and a half hours with the Italian winning the first two sets pretty comfortably before being embroiled in a battle. He did not allow any break point chances in the opening set such was his dominance as he pinched two breaks himself. Before he took the set 6-2 on the second set point. The second set was more of the same with Sinner having no real issues on his serve which proved a dominant weapon and he edged it 6-4 sealing the one break he needed.
Finally Dimitrov had some success on the Sinner serve. But only when Sinner had broken himself. He hit back to break back in the third set and made it 5-5 before holding as he looked to send it all the way. But Sinner levelled up and sent it to a tie-break which he dominated 7-3.
