Daniil Medvedev is through to the
US Open quarterfinal and after the match, Medvedev admitted that New York is in his heart.
Daniil Medvedev has some great and some bitter memories about New York City and the US Open. He played his first Grand Slam final here in 2019 (lost to Nadal) which left a bitter taste in his mouth. It also left him with additional hunger which is why he is on a tear currently marching towards what he hopes will be his maiden grand slam title.
After his triumph over Botic Van de Zandschulp, Medvedev said:
“I had my first Grand Slam breakthrough in New York reaching 2019 final against Rafael Nadal, so already New York is in my heart. Dominic Thiem played amazing in semi-finals last year, hopefully, I can go one better this year.”
Asked about hte match he gaes this assesment:
“First two sets he was missing and I was controlling the game and then he got more aggressive, he made it much tougher for me. I couldn’t find my rhythm in the first two sets due to shadows, but in the fourth set, it was more clear and I could find my toss, rhythm and serve better."
Medvedev also took a chance to praise his opponent saying:
“Botic’s run was amazing, to come from qualifiers to main draw is amazing. He played so many long matches but was still able to come back, anything could’ve happened in fourth set."
His next opponent will either be Carlos Alcaraz or Felix Auger-Aliassime. That match will begin at 02:30 CET and we will have a report so don't go far.
