Casper Ruud's reaction said it all...What we witnessed on Thursday night at the 2025
Rome Open was a true display of what tennis would look like if played to absolute perfection.
Jannik Sinner raised the bar against an in-form opponent and made him look like a complete amateur. The list of broken records just keeps growing and the rest of the tour has a big problem.
Not even the most optimistic Sinner fan could have predicted what happende during the night session at Campo Centrale. The Italian turned into a tennis god in this quarterfinal match and handed Casper Ruud -fresh off his Madrid Open title- the worst beating of his career.
Whille Jannik showed brief lapses in his earlier matches, it seems as his round of 16 clash with Francisco Cerundolo was the wake-up call that unleashed the beast. And today, the beast came crashing down on a helpless Ruud.
Sinner served incredibly, returned with deadly precision,m struck winners from both wings, and glided across the court. It's clear now that the time off due to his suspension left him not only refreshed but also more motivated. Phisically, he looks stronger than ever, as if he's added a few pounds of muscle as well.
For one hour and four minutes, Jannik played perfect tennis -and that's no exaggeration. The world No. 1 didn't put a single foot wrong. Everything he executed was flawless. In that first set, Sinner was on fire, at times evoking memories of Federer, Nadal or Djokovic in their prime. And make no mistake: that's not a casual comparison.
Even the numbers support the parallel with the Big Three:
He has now recorded 25 consecutive match wins, placing him alongside those tennis legends and former world no. 1 Andy Murray.
He now ranks second in most consecutive sets won against top-10 opponents, surpassing Björn Borg and trailing only four behind John McEnroe's all time mark.
The world No. 1 delivered a near-unprecedented show for the Italian crowd at the Foro Italico. In the first set alone, he allowed just 7 total points to Ruud, a mind-blowing stat, especially considering the Norwegian is the current world No. 7 and had been dominant on clay all season.
Sinner's next opponent will be Tommy Paul, who booked his semifinal spot earlier by defeating Poland's Hubert Hurkacz. But don't be shocked if not only Paul, but also Alcaraz and even Musetti, struggle to get a good night's sleep knowing that if they want to win in Rome, they'll have to go through Darth Sinner.
