There has been a lot of excitement surrounding Nick Kyrgios' return to tennis. The Australian is a phenomenal character and box office on the court. His charisma and personality attract a lot of attention to his contests.
With the Davis Cup just around the corner, many are wondering if we will see the former Wimbledon finalist in the Australian squad. However, Kyrgios will not take to the court against Sweden. That said, Lleyton Hewitt has left the door open for his return.
Kyrgios is a phenomenal athlete who can compete with the very best the game has to offer and knows how to perform on the big stage. It was a disappointing Australian Open for the 29-year-old, as Britain's Jacob Fearnley knocked him out in the first round of the singles competition.
As mentioned earlier, there was much speculation about whether he would be competing for Australia in the Davis Cup. However, his absence from the tie against Sweden due to an abdominal tear is a significant blow to the team. Hewitt hopes Kyrgios can recover and return for future matches in the competition.
"Nick won't be coming here. He's suffered a couple of injuries through the Australian summer," Hewitt said.
"I was excited about the potential for him to be back in the Davis Cup team, but it wasn't to be. Obviously, he's very underdone with his body, so it's not surprising he's picked up an injury trying to play five-set tennis straight away without many matches.
"Hopefully, fingers crossed, we get through, and he may be an option.
"I'm very happy and confident with the squad I have at my disposal. I'm also very proud of the guys, to be honest, because they make it a priority to play for Australia … It's not an easy time for us.
"We've had a lot of pressure and expectation playing in Australia, and then, straight away, we hop on a plane and prioritise this."
Aleksandar Vukic has been selected for the team and will soon make his Davis Cup debut. His selection follows an impressive run in the Australian Open, where he reached the third round. He will look to maintain his strong form and achieve significant results for his country. Vukic will be in the squad alongside the likes of Alex de Minaur and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
"Very privileged, especially to be surrounded by legends of the Australian tennis scene. It's a big honour for me," he said after flying out with his teammates on Sunday.
"I'll do my best to play my part and represent the country and everyone there as best I can.
"Lleyton (Hewitt), Rochey (Tony Roche), and Crabby (Jaymon Crabb) sat me down the day after I lost (at the Australian Open) and told me I'd been selected for the Davis Cup team. It kind of softened the blow after losing that match," he said.
"It was very nice to hear, and I walked out of Melbourne with more of a smile on my face for sure."
It will be interesting to see if Australia can make a deep run in the iconic competition and whether Kyrgios will take part for the first time since 2019.
Here was Nick Kyrgios talking about some of his Tennis colleagues and the first thing that comes to mind when he thinks of them. His answers are hilarious.
