Tennis can be utterly magical and it can also be heartbreaking, Nicolas Jarry proved the latter after he was defeated in the final by Alexander Zverev at the 2024 Rome Open 6-4, 7-5 in favour of the German. But his post-match speech left the crowd as emotional as him.

Zverev sealed the straight sets win over the Chilean and in his post match interview, he couldn't look at his wife and kids without getting choked up. The crowd starts applauding him and singing to him as he could barely hold back the tears.

Jarry has been one of the greatest stories this week with the ever improving clay court specialist continuing to show his dangerman qualities on this surface. In a draw that has been fairly open since the beginning, Jarry glided his way through. In the latter stages, he took down Alexandre Muller, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul. The latter two in epic three set showdowns.

But as ever, it was very much that he couldn't produce his best when he got to the biggest match. Still though, he accrues huge points. He will break well into the top 20 next week and is sure to be a Roland Garros contender. While he has not won a title like a year ago at the 2024 Geneva Open, he has still proven a point that he is very much a player to watch.

From John McEnroe's comment last year at Wimbledon about not knowing who he is, he has certainly proved to the tennis world this week not to forget Nicolas Jarry. It showed in this case the real toil and also the disappointment when it doesn't go the way you want it. As well as letting down family members or perceiving to in defeat. But certainly Jarry let nobody down in Rome.
