Kei Nishikori recently made his return to tennis playing a challenger event in Puerto Rico and he's now announced his next events in the coming weeks.
Nishikori was away for almost two years as the Japanese player dealt with a lot of injuries including a hip injury that required surgical intervention. It was a complicated process but he worked his way back to tennis even though he needed to push back his comeback multiple times before finally making it. It came in Puerto Rico last week and it proved a really solid outing for him as he was able to beat everybody en route to the trophy.
He's now part of the club of veterans that have lifted challenger trophies and that's going to be spirit moving forward as well. Returning back home to Florida, Nishikori took to social media to announce his next events and they are two challengers and then two ATP events if he gets a wild card.
Upcoming schedule
The Japanese player will obviously continue playing and the plans are simple. Build up his tennis in order to compete at the US Open and towards that goal, Nihiskori announced his upcoming schedule. He wrote:
"Hi everyone…back home in Bradenton. Very happy with
the result. I feel great. My next tournaments will be Bloomfield CH
(July 3) and Chicago CH (July 10). I have also requested WC’s in ATP
Atlanta and ATP Washington. Hope to see you guys soon. Thx for all the
kind messages."
The first two events are upcoming challenger events and then we have two ATP events. His participation is reliant on wild cards but it's likely that he'll get them being a respected veteran whose injury caused him to become an unranked player. It will be a while before his ranking is good enough to enter ATP events directly.
