While the defeat was not expected and while the result is not shocking the manner of it was shocking in a way. As Eurosports analyst Mats Wilander put it, Federer looked very ordinary against Hurkacz which speaks a lot about a player that is everything but ordinary.
Martina Navratilov was asked on BBC about Federer and his future to which she replied:
"Things are complicated because of COVID. So there's another unknown you have to deal with. Do you really want to give up your family so that you can play tennis because at least he had his family with him."
Asked to explain the loss to Hurkacz she said:
"But he is now two years older than he was at the last Wimbledon. So
it's a combination: the two surgeries, he got his body together and the
knee is fine, but he's two years older so it's father time I think
catching up."
Navratilova followed up her comments by saying that things are complicated and she thinks that time is finally catching up with him:
"No matter how much he works, he can not get any younger. Also, he maybe wants to work harder but your older so you can't work as hard as you really want to. So it just gets complicated and maybe father time is finally catching up."
