Cameron Norrie dragged himself to the finish line against Taylor Fritz who squandered dozens of chances which would have sealed the win for the US 2-6 7-6(2) 7-5.
The first match of the day saw Tommy Paul beat Dan Evans in a long and gruelling affair with Fritz and Norrie putting on an equally solid show. Fritz opened in a spectacular fashion taking the ball early and dominating from the baseline.
The American served well and bombarded away with Norrie barely escaping with any games in the opening set. It was a 6-2 to Fritz and he had plenty of chances to have a similar result in the second set. Norrie opened well against Fritz in the second jumping out to an early 3-0 lead but gave it away pretty quickly as well.
The only way Norrie survived the rest of the set was thanks to his serve which worked perfectly. The best thing about it is that he hit when it mattered the most. Fritz was a bit lazy and did not focus enough playing a bit too loose which cost him, big time. He had five break points to go ahead but Norrie saved all of them.
He outplayed an erratic Fritz in the tiebreak 7-2 and played a fabulous final set to win it 7-5. The score is now tied with the doubles deciding the victor.
