Kei Nishikori's run at the Tokyo
Olympic Games was cut short by Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. The performance of the Serbian in that match was impressive and it seemed like he was destined for the gold medal. Things fell apart in the end for the Serbian as he left the Japanese capital without a single medal.
Kei Nishikori was asked about that after his match at the Citi Open in Washington:
“Expected Djokovic would win [the gold medal], but he went off from in the middle [of the match against Zverev]. Sascha [Zverev] was next to him, so it was natural he won gold."
Nishikori then showed sympathy for Djokovic expressing his belief that the Serbian truly deserves a gold medal for all the things he has done for tennis. He said:
"Feel a bit sorry for Djokovic, he definitely deserves a medal the most at the moment – [he] has had unbelievable results.”
The 31-year old Nishikori ended his Citi Open campaign last night with a defeat to McDonald. He will turn his attention to the National Bank Open in Toronto next week.
