Novak Djokovic lost in the 2nd round of the Monte-Carlo Masters last year and he did it again this year despite battling hard against Davidovich Fokina 3-6 7-6(5) 1-6
In the first match since Dubai,
Novak Djokovic battled Davidovich Fokina in the 2nd round of the
Monte-Carlo Masters and it was a proper battle. It was also a very weird match that is very hard to put into words as Djokovic expectedly struggled. He admitted before the event that it was going to be a struggle and truly it was.
Fokina jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and double down on that with another break and a 4-1 lead. Djokovic pulled back one of the breaks but never quite got fully back into the set as the Spaniard won it with 6-3. The 2nd set was something else as we saw literally everything. At times it was brilliant tennis by both but at times it was straight bad. Both players struggled on their serve, especially Fokina who had 3 terrible games.
It was a shame for him as he was up 3-0 and then 4-2 as well. He truly wanted to win diving for the balls on clay which is ill-advised and it earned him a few bruises and cuts. Due to the MTO, Fokina lost some rhythm and Djokovic took a 5-4 lead serving for the set but failed to convert it. It was just sloppy tennis all around with Djokovic ultimately winning in the tiebreak 7-5 after a brilliant passing shot.
The Serbian trailed 4-2 and it looked like he finally arrived in the match. Well, he didn't as sloppy play continue with Fokina jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. The Serbian got increasingly frustrated as he lost his serve once more for the 1-5 deficit. He mentally checked out of the match with very poor body language overall as Fokina finished it off with 6-1.
