Alex de
Minaur commented on his recent defeat to
Jannik Sinner in the decisive match of
the
Davis Cup Finals.
The
Australian tennis player was thoroughly outplayed by Sinner, who finished with
a lopsided score of 6-3, 6-0, winning the last eight games of the match
consecutively. The Italian young star ended the year in great form as the world
No. 4, and in the Davis Cup, he once again demonstrated his significant
progress by securing victories against Tallon Griekspoor, Novak Djokovic, and
Alex De Minaur in the final. Additionally, he played in the doubles,
contributing to two wins alongside Lorenzo Sonego.
In the
final, Sinner delivered the decisive point that gave Italy its second trophy in
history, 46 years after the first one in 1976. Following his defeat to De
Minaur, the Australian commented on the impressive level that Sinner has shown
in recent months.
"I
think probably Novak [Djokovic] said maybe a week ago, Jannik [Sinner] is
riding this amazing wave of confidence" De Minaur said.
"He’s
playing in indoor conditions with some heavy balls where he can hit the
absolute c**p out of the ball. He’s seriously impressive at the level he’s
showing," he added.
"I
will find ways to get better, to be able to hurt these types of players. Today
I just didn’t have enough. Disappointed I wasn’t able to give the boys a chance
to play the doubles yet another year. That’s probably the biggest
disappointment," World No. 12 added.
Sinner
increased his record against De Minaur and continues to be a formidable
opponent with a resounding 6-0, including encounters in the Davis Cup and ATP
Tour. Their first meeting took place in the 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals, where the
Italian secured the title. Additionally, the final of the Masters 1000 Canadian
Open in August of this year stands out.
