Novak Djokovic has written tennis history on Monday, becoming the first player with 311 weeks on the ATP throne since the start of the ATP ranking in 1973, leaving
Roger Federer on 310!
Novak is enjoying his fifth streak as world no. 1 following the first that came in 2011, standing as the most consistent player in the previous decade and taking the ultimate ranking record away from Roger Federer, who held it since 2012 when he passed Pete Sampras. Novak had been melting the deficit in the previous years, setting eyes on those 311 weeks at the top and achieving that with rock-solid tennis that no one could match.
The Serb returned from that nasty elbow injury with excellent results in the second part of 2018, battling with Rafael Nadal and spending more weeks on the ATP throne than the Spaniard to earn the record and write history books.
Novak's fifth streak started after the last year's
Australian Open, with no one to challenge the great Serb in the previous 14 months. We have to say that Djokovic's record would have come earlier if the pandemic hadn't frozen the ranking between March and August last year.
Novak made a strong start of 2021 campaign, winning his ninth Australian Open crown and keeping all the rivals far behind in his quest for the greatest player of all time.
