Novak Djokovic is preparing for his return to the courts next week at the ATP 250 Qatar Open and will be joined by a former top-10 player as a temporary coach, in the absence of Andy Murray on this trip. Media Group Sport Klub reports that Spaniard Fernando Verdasco is accompanying Nole in Doha.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion last played at the Australian Open, where he reached the semi-finals—eliminating Carlos Alcaraz along the way—before retiring due to injury while facing Alexander Zverev.
The Serbian suffered a thigh injury, leading many to believe he would be sidelined for months. However, Djokovic surprised fans by announcing his return to Doha, a tournament of great importance to him given his role as a tennis ambassador in Qatar.
Recently, Nole confirmed the extension of his partnership with Murray as his coach, at least until Wimbledon mid-year. However, this time the three-time Grand Slam champion did not travel for the Middle East swing, so his role will be taken over by Fernando Verdasco, a former world No. 7.
“He [Verdasco] will only be the first to train with the best tennis player of all time when he arrives,” Sport Klub reported. “That is, they will spar together because the Spaniard, although he is 41 years old, is still very fit.”
Verdasco himself shared a photo from the Qatar Open, confirming his presence at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, where the tournament will take place starting next week.
