🚨 Novak Djokovic withdraws from the Nitto ATP Finals, due to ‘ongoing injury’. Ends his season.
Novak Djokovic who has won seven ATP Finals titles in his career has decided against playing this year's edition of the tournament as expected citing an ongoing injury behind his decision not to play in Turin.
Djokovic was due to play between November 10-17 in Turin but has long stated his intention not to be involved and that he was unlikely to play again after ending his season with a withdrawal in Paris this past week. He has since been seen holidaying in the Maldives and meeting fans at the Belgrade Open.
But his name remained on the list until this morning in which he decided to withdraw and now sees the field for the Year End finals fully set led by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. With no Davis Cup on the horizon either for the Serbian, he has decided to end his season now.
Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur and Casper Ruud were all playing this week despite being qualified if Djokovic withdrew anyway and so all are now only playing for seeded position over anything else. It is a blow for the tournament as it saw some of the most entertaining games of last season in which Djokovic and Sinner faced off three times in two weeks.
But now the home hero will carry the torch in the absence of the Serbian kingpin.
"It's quite an honour to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin. I was really looking forward to being there, but due to an ongoing injury I won't be playing next week. Apologies to those who were planning to see me. Wishing all the players a great tournament, see you soon," he wrote.
The field is now set as a result which is the following.
Jannik Sinner
Alexander Zverev
Carlos Alcaraz
Daniil Medvedev
Taylor Fritz
Casper Ruud
Alex De Minaur
Andrey Rublev
Alternates:
Grigor Dimitrov
Stefanos Tsitsipas
