Novak Djokovic's likelihood of qualifying for the ATP Finals to defend his title has massively diminished. The defending champion may now miss the prestigious end of season tournament in Turin due to Taylor Fritz.
Fritz beat Alexander Zverev 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) in a thrilling battle and now put Fritz in pole position to finish the US Open not only as the American No.1. But also as the main challenger to Novak Djokovic in reaching the ATP Finals.
The top eight players in the ATP Race rankings qualify for the ATP Finals. He is now down in ninth place with Fritz usurping him into 7th. Alex de Minaur is also still ahead of Novak Djokovic in the current rankings after his strong run at the US Open.
One that might add further nightmares as he faces Jack Draper tonight for a spot in the semi-finals and if he wins, it could be even worse for Djokovic. Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev are certain to qualify. Whilst Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev are also ahead.
Djokovic though still does have a chance for two reasons. He is seemingly set to play the Shanghai Masters next month. Whether he makes it to China though remains to be seen with the 24-time Grand Slam champion usually snubbing a full schedule. Usually after Grand Slam disappointment too, it isn't the top thing on his radar.
He also could yet play the Paris Masters with 1,000 ranking points on the way. But Fritz and De Minaur being more consistent and playing more often could spell disaster if they go further or win further titles. So it is very much crisis mode as it has been most of the season for Djokovic in his race to Turin. Ironically this also by a player who has a horrific record against Djokovic. So perhaps a level of payback for all those losses for Fritz.
