Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic’s wife, Jelena, has opened up about
the potential retirement of the former world number one. The 37-year-old’s
future has been a point of discussion ever since he completed his trophy
cabinet earlier this year when he won the gold medal for his country in the
Paris Olympics.
He defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the singles category final
in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6. Djokovic’s wife, Jelena, has recently
spoken to La Nacion, as quoted by the English media outlet Daily Express, where
she revealed that Serbia’s legendary tennis star has no intention of stopping anytime
soon. "I know for sure that he will not stop here," she said.
Djokovic is regarded as the greatest player in the history
of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era, having won as many as
24 Grand Slam titles. The 2024 season has not been a great one for the
Belgrade-born as for the first time in seven years, he failed to win a single
Grand Slam. His best outing in a major event this year came at Wimbledon where
he lost in the final to Alcaraz in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
After winning that Olympic gold medal, Djokovic in a press
talk announced that he is no longer motivated to take part in every ATP event
and instead, he would like to focus on big events such as Grand Slams, Davis Cup
and Olympics.
“Torino is not my goal at all, to be honest, I am not
chasing ATP Finals, I am not chasing the rankings,” he said. “As far as I am
concerned, I am done with those tournaments for my career. Whether I will play
in other tournaments this year or in the future, I can’t say right now. My main
priorities are playing for the national team and Slams, everything else is less
important.”
