Reilly
Opelka stated that Carlos Alcaraz is at the level of Novak Djokovic and Rafael
Nadal in terms of his gameplay.
O pelka is currently off the circuit due to a
hip injury. In an interview with the Tennis Channel's Inside In podcast, the
former world No. 17 was asked if Americans are ready to return to the top of
the ATP rankings, considering that there are two in the top 15 and four in the
top 30, all aged 25 or younger.
"I
don't think we'll ever get a guy to beat Alcaraz," Opelka said.
"Like, Taylor Fritz is the best American hands down right now. He's just
so consistent, he takes care of everyone he's supposed to. But now, you know,
with Alcaraz coming up and Holger Rune."
Opelka
mentioned the match between Alcaraz and Fritz in Miami, where the Spanish
player defeated the former Indian Wells champion 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
"Look what happened in Miami," he added. "As great a ball
striker as Fritz is, Alcaraz is so fast. Tennis-wise, he is up there with Novak
and Rafa."
