The Madrid Open was shrouded in controversy regarding the disparity of the treatment between
ATP and
WTA tours and this has continued onto the Rome Open.
Being held for the first time for the duration of ten days, the prize money has stirred up debate with the ATP runner-up set to receive more money than the WTA champion in Rome.
The men's singles champion will earn around 1.1 million euros, while the women's champion takes home less than half in 521,700 euros.
Even the runner-up earns 580 thousand compared to the prior amount for the WTA champion.
The Rome Open have attempted to take steps to make this better though compared with a promise for this to be the same for 2025. A trend already bucked by Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid.
Albeit with Madrid, that is after resolve previously with the prior tournament director Ion TIriac even taking the WTA to court to try and not pay the same amount.
