Dominic Thiem played his first match at the
US Open following his triumph in 2020 and he lost to an in-form Carreno Busta 5-7 1-6 7-5 3-6.
Thiem has had a lacklustre comeback season so far with some decent wins on clay but his form on hard courts has been very poor. The Austrian wasn't very lucky with his draw because he drew an in-form Carreno Busta. The wild card was useful for him but ultimately it was not enough to win the match against a player who shines in New York traditionally.
He opened well taking an early 2-0 lead which he held for a while but eventually, Carreno came back. The Spaniard pressed hard towards the end of the set and he got it 7-5. Thiem was aggressive in the set opting to take the points but ultimately he was a bit too aggressive. Losing the set in that manner affected him and he completely fell apart in the 2nd 1-6.
The 3rd set was his best of the day but also his best in a while. He took an early 3-0 lead giving it back a bit later but finishing off strong and taking the set 7-5. Busta was a bit weak in this one committing far too many errors. The final set was another close one but Thiem simply lacked the consistency and towards the end Busta was able to secure it 6-3.
