French tennis star
Gael Monfils has opened up about his
struggles while recovering from an injury.
The 36-year-old had an injury concern in the first round of the Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open) where he needed some attention.
Talking after the match, Monfils stated that some days are ‘tougher’
for athletes but that’s part and parcel of playing at the highest level.
"People, they think we are rabbits,” he said. “Like,
wow, we wake up and we super happy to go run for an hour and do the fitness.
Some days is tougher, as for everybody. That's part where we better as athlete
because we have this discipline.”
Monfils went on to beat Britain’s Cameron Norrie with a
score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to book his place in the next round of the competition.
The Paris-born is now set to face Australia’s Alex de Minaur
in the round of 32 clash on Wednesday.
Monfils will be hoping to keep his winning runs going in order
to get the best preparation under his belt ahead of the fourth and final Grand
Slam of the year.
The US Open will begin in less than 15 days’ time in New
York where players from all over the world will showcase their talent.
Monfils best appearance in the mega-event was reaching the
semifinal in 2016 when he was knocked out by the current world number two
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
