Fans will be unable to see a mouthwatering tie at the Western
& Southern Cincinnati Open after the withdrawal of Ukraine’s tennis star Elina
Svitolina.
The 28-year-old was due to face the former world number one Caroline
Wozniacki in the round of 64 clash at the competition on Monday.
However, moments before that, Svitolina announced that she
will not be taking part in the competition because of a ‘medical advice’.
“Unfortunately I have been experiencing some foot pain since
Wimbledon,” she wrote in a post on her official Twitter account. “I was advised
to have a scan after Montreal which has shown some issues that need addressing
and resting.
"So I am unable to play in Cincinnati this year. I am really
disappointed to pull out anywhere but I love the fans in Cincy and love playing
in front of them which makes it extra hard but I have to take the medical
advice I have been given.”
In the same post, Svitolina expressed optimism that she will
be able to recover in time to play in the fourth and the final Grand Slam of
the year.
“I will do my best to rest and recover in time for the US
Open now. Thank you for your understanding,” she added.
