After Gael Monfils became the first finalist of the 2020 Open Sud de France, his opponent was to be decided between David Goffin and Vasek Pospisil. The second-seeded Belgian wanted to join the first-seeded Frenchman in the final but he had a difficult task ahead.
One year ago, Pospisil had a serious surgery done in New York City. Now, he is back in play and in a good form in Montpellier as he reached first semifinal since 2015. On the way to the semifinal, the Canadian defeated Bedene, Shapovalov, and Gasquet.
But now he faced world number 10, David Goffin who was flawless against Bublik and Herbert. Pospisil entered the match ideally when he got a break early in the first set. Then, he went on to win the set 6-3 after converting the 3rd setpoint.
However, Goffin showed all of his experience in the second set when he first turned away 3 breakpoints in the first game and then converted his first in the second game. The Belgian added another break in the 6th game and won the set 6-1.
The second 2020 Open Sud de France finalist was to be decided in the third set. Once again, it was Pospisil who had 3 breakpoints on Goffin's first service game. But again he did not convert any of those. Both players then held their serves until the 9th game.
Goffin was able to break Pospisil in that game and it seemed that he will join Monfils in the final. Yet there was no end of the match as Pospisil managed to win 8 points in a row to get his service back and confirm the break on his serve. He followed on momentum and earned another break to win the third set 7-5. Pospisil will play in his second ATP Final where he will meet Gael Monfils.
