The semi-finals of the 2026
Barcelona Open will be played on Saturday following a draw reshaped by the withdrawal of world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz due to a wrist injury. The remaining field features two first-time matchups:
Arthur Fils against Rafael Jodar, and
Andrey Rublev against Hamad Medjedovic.
Fils and Jodar arrive without dropping a set in their most recent matches, while Rublev and Medjedovic extend contrasting patterns—long-term consistency at
ATP 500 level versus a qualifying run with multiple wins over higher-ranked opponents. The absence of Alcaraz after his injury removes the top seed and creates a direct path to the final for all four players.
Arthur Fils vs Rafael Jodar: control meets momentum
Arthur Fils (No. 30) reached the semi-finals after defeating second seed Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-4. The match was defined by break-point efficiency: Musetti saved two break points at 3-4 in the first set, but Fils converted his third opportunity to move ahead 5-3 and served out the set. In the second set, Fils secured a decisive break in the ninth game and closed the match with a hold to love.
Fils’ current form follows his return from an eight-month injury absence in February. His recent results include a runner-up finish to Carlos Alcaraz in Doha. In
Barcelona, he has progressed without dropping a set and has not required a deciding set in any round referenced.
Rafael Jodar (No. 55) advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cameron Norrie (world No. 24). The Spaniard recorded three breaks of serve in the first set despite being broken twice, indicating five total breaks across the set. In the second set, he broke in the fifth and seventh games to close the match in straight sets.
Jodar has now won all three of his matches this week in straight sets and extends his current winning streak to eight matches. He also defeated Norrie earlier this season in Acapulco, confirming a 2-0 record against the Briton in 2026.
The 19-year-old’s progression includes 13 tour-level wins, a maiden title in Marrakech, and a third-round result at the Miami Masters. Twelve months ago, he was ranked outside the Top 600. His current ranking of No. 55 reflects that progression within a one-year period.
Historically, Jodar becomes the fifth Spanish teenager to reach the Barcelona semi-finals in the Open Era, alongside Alex Corretja (1994), Carlos Moya (1996), Rafael Nadal (2005–06), and Carlos Alcaraz (2022–23). There is no prior head-to-head between Fils and Jodar.
Andrey Rublev vs Hamad Medjedovic: consistency against disruption
Andrey Rublev (seed No. 5) advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tomas Machac. The result follows another straight-sets win earlier in the week over Lorenzo Sonego (6-2, 6-3), where Rublev recovered from an early break and saved four break points while breaking Sonego five times.
Rublev’s performance in Barcelona continues a long-term trend at ATP 500 level. The Russian has reached 33 quarter-finals at this category, a total matched only by Alexander Zverev among active players in the post-2009 period. His results this week include consecutive straight-sets wins and no three-set matches referenced.
Hamad Medjedovic (No. 88) progressed from qualifying into the semi-finals. He defeated Nuno Borges 7-6(6), 6-2 in the quarter-finals, taking the first set via tiebreak before securing multiple breaks in the second set to close the match.
Earlier in the tournament, Medjedovic recorded a straight-sets win over world No. 10 Alex de Minaur (6-3, 6-4). He enters the semi-finals on a four-match winning streak in the main draw and has won nine of his last ten matches on clay.
Medjedovic’s ranking trajectory is also notable. He exited the Top 100 approximately one month ago and is projected to rise significantly following this run. His current ranking stands at No. 88 and No. 66 in the live Rankings. There is no prior head-to-head between Rublev and Medjedovic.
