The quarter-finals of the ATP China Open will get underway on Monday, October 2, with Carlos Alcaraz set to clash with Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev set to face Nicolas Jarry. Here is our preview of the ATP 500 tournament.
Top seed Alcaraz will face seventh seed Ruud in the final match of the day on Lotus. The Spaniard has moved past his opponents in Beijing with relative ease so far, ousting qualifier Yannick Hanfmann and World No. 18 Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets to reach the quarter-final.
Meanwhile, Ruud has faced more difficulty to get to this stage, defeating Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6 (5), 6-3 before coming back from a set down to edge past Tomas Martin Etcheverry 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7). Alcaraz currently leads their head-to-head 3-0, with the players having last faced each other in the final of the 2022 US Open.
Kicking off the day on Diamond will be second seed Daniil Medvedev's clash with France's Ugo Humbert. The Russian has had to face two Top 20 players so far in Beijing but displayed confidence in both matches as he defeated Tommy Paul and Alex de Minaur in straight sets.
However, taking on the World No. 36 may not be easy for Medvedev, as the former fought back from a set down to defeat fifth seed and World No. 6 Andrey Rublev in the second round. Moreover, the Frenchman actually has a 2-0 lead in his head-to-head with Medvedev, suggesting that the World No. 3 will need to bring his A game to the match.
Following this, eighth seed Zverev will take on big hitter Jarry. The German player has not been progressing through rounds as steadily as he would probably have hoped, with his matches against Diego Schwartzman and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina both becoming three-set battles with a tiebreak in the first set. Nevertheless, he only won one match in straight sets on his way to the title at the Chengdu Open last week.
Jarry pulled off an impressive feat in the first round by ousting fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, but the Chilean player struggled a lot more against Matteo Arnaldi in the second round. The first two sets both went to a tiebreak before Jarry won the decider 6-3 to secure his place in the quarter-finals.
He has faced the World No. 10 five times before, with Zverev narrowly leading their head-to-head 3-2.
Last up on Diamond will be sixth seed Sinner's match against World No. 20 Grigor Dimitrov. The Italian player dropped a set after losing a tiebreak in his first-round clash with Dan Evans but ultimately moved past him 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3. He then defeated Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 6-0.
Dimitrov has had a similar journey at the tournament so far, having fought back from a set down against Mackenzie McDonald in the opening round before defeating World No. 4 Holger Rune in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.
Their head-to-head is currently level at 1-1, with Sinner having won their most recent clash at the 2023 Miami Open in straight sets.
