Carlos
Alcaraz sent a message of support to the families in Murcia after a serious
fire left 13 dead in a nightclub.
A tragic
incident shook Spain early Sunday morning when a fire in three nightclub venues
in Murcia resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people and left four others
injured. Spanish authorities have deemed it the deadliest fire in the country
since the 1990s.
This news
has made headlines around the world, and
Carlos Alcaraz, a two-time Grand Slam
champion, reacted from China, where he is currently competing in the ATP 500
Beijing Open. Alcaraz hails from El Palmar, a significant town in Murcia, and
he expressed his support for his city and the affected individuals.
“Very
shocked by the terrible news coming from Murcia after the fire in several
nightclubs this past morning... My condolences to the families of the deceased
and a huge hug to all those affected 🙏🏻💔,” Alcaraz wrote on X (former Twitter).
The
20-year-old tennis sensation continues to compete in Beijing, maintaining the
impressive form he has shown this year. In his first two matches, he defeated
Yannick Hanfmann (6-4, 6-3) and sailed past Lorenzo Musetti (6-2, 6-2) to reach
the quarterfinals.
This time,
he will face the 7th seed, Casper Ruud (world No. 9). This matchup is a rematch
of the 2022 US Open final, where Alcaraz secured his first Grand Slam victory
by defeating the Norwegian.
The rivalry
between the two has seen three previous encounters, all ending in victory for
Carlos Alcaraz, with their most recent meeting taking place in the final at
Flushing Meadows.
Although
Ruud is going through a somewhat inconsistent phase, he managed to defeat two
strong opponents in the early rounds, first Jan-Lennard Struff (22nd) and then
Tomas Etcheverry (31st) in the decisive third-set tie-break.
