As we head towards the second week of
Wimbledon, the first foray has been nothing short of a malaise of shocks but going into Day Six, there are still a number of huge names in action. The schedule is now set and we look ahead to the Last 16 line-up being confirmed.
Sinner, Swiatek and Djokovic take Centre Stage
Jannik Sinner again finds his way onto Centre Court to begin Saturday as he will face off against Pedro Martinez in a kind draw en route to the Last 16.
No real noise has been made about the World No.1 thus far with the Italian not being in the same sort of malaise as Carlos Alcaraz at least from a British television perspective with the BBC instead wanting to focus on the it mixed doubles couple of Raducanu and Alcaraz.
Their route of trying to ship the duo has meant that many of the top names haven't massively figured. Sinner though has no reason to really, he has eased through his work against Sebastian Baez and Aleksandar Vukic and will know against Martinez, it will likely be similar.
Bigger tests will likely await but for now Sinner is in the lane of living up to favourite tag.
The real space likely comes from tie two on Centre Court. There is certainly zero love lost at least on Danielle Collins' side toward
Iga Swiatek. The former World No.1 and queen of the sport until last year, Swiatek was dubbed fake by Collins at the Olympic Games last year which semi-started the run towards the bottom that Iga has gone on since albeit likely more her loss to Zheng Qinwen following that.
Swiatek has never performed at her best on grass and most of the 7-2 Head-to-Head Swiatek has is on clay so it's hard to read. Especially given her escape over Caty McNally but Collins if she wins has a big chance to unlock the bottom quarter even more.
Then onto
Novak Djokovic.who faces Miomir Kecmanovic. A compatriot laden affair and one Djokovic leads 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 win on this surface back in 2022.
Djokovic of course has aged slightly since then but has not faced his usual scare so far so it will be interesting if he does in this next contest.
Kecmanovic came through in four against Jesper de Jong and then in five against Alex Michelsen in a shock first win. So while Djokovic will be favourite to reach the fourth round again, can he pose any problems?
Andreeva, Rybakina and Shelton among other headline acts
Three WTA stars to really keep an eye out for when it comes to the latter stages given their draws also play on Saturday. Mirra Andreeva faces the ever improving Hailey Baptiste but after an indifferent run since her heroics at the turn of the year, the Russian has a smile on her face and is performing the best she has since she turned 18.
Emma Navarro with her trademark humour is also smiling and in a good place. She faces Barbora Krejcikova, the defending champion who benefited last year from the draw falling into her lap. Could Navarro do the same over the coming days? She has to dethrone the defending champion first.
Over on Court 2, Elena Rybakina is seen by many as a real main player to watch for the title and after thrashing Maria Sakkari it's easy to see why. She faces Clara Tauson again fairly away from the spotlight and it is these coming days where she will aim to show her best tennis.
Ben Shelton returns also on Court One, a day after he won in mere minutes after the odd end to his match the night before as he was serving for it. He faces Lucky Loser but well known entity Marton Fucsovics.
A double dose of Aussies too as Alex de Minaur faces surprise package August Holmgren, while Daria Kasatkina takes on Liudmila Samsonova. A tie to savour there between two players very adept on grass.
Grigor Dimitrov v Sebastian Ofner, Jakub Mensik v Flavio Cobolli and also Brandon Nakashima v Lorenzo Sonego other highlights on Saturday. As well as Bencic v Cocciaretto and Bouzas Maneiro v Yastremska. A group who benefited from shock wins now still involved and aiming to head into the second week.
