The
schedule is now confirmed for Day Two of the 2023
Wimbledon Championships with
Elena Rybakina set to open Centre Court action.
Carlos Alcaraz,
Andy Murray and
Aryna Sabalenka are also slated for a packed day of action at SW19 and as ever, we will
preview proceedings ahead of Tuesday morning.
Rybakina hopes to brush off illness concerns
As is tradition and was followed by Novak Djokovic until rain delays prompted a very late finish on the opening day, Elena Rybakina opens up Centre Court proceedings as defending Women's Champion.
A whirlwind run 12 months ago and one that she is only getting the rewards for now due to consistent form with no ranking points and certain sections of the media caring more about her Russian roots than her winning the title.
This year sees another narrative evoked for Rybakina with illness besieging her plans since Roland Garros, one that she looked superb in and potentially was a forerunner.
That came crashing down and barring a few rounds at Berlin before losing to Donna Vekic (no disgrace on grass), it hasn't been ideal.
This featured Eastbourne withdrawal and media who watched her practice against Sabalenka said she struggled to win a point. Not 100% and against Shelby Rogers, this could spell trouble.
Rogers famously found out the unbeatable seemingly Ash Barty at the time but has a streak of going hot and cold.
Rybakina only leads their head to head narrowly though at 3-2. Rogers winning their most recent clash at the 2022 Libema Open in straight sets.
But Rybakina has defeated her at Wimbledon before back in 2021 so has home for an SW19 win over the American.
Home hero Murray set for Peniston clash and Sabalenka ends Centre Court Schedule
But for the Brits, the big tie will see home hero Andy Murray, the only player to dent Novak Djokovic's dominance albeit back in 2013 make a rapturous return.
Always a hero at SW19 where he has had some of his finest moments, he comes into this tournament only just missing out on seeding after winning Surbiton and Nottingham and faces a player who relishes this time of year.
That being Ryan Peniston who holds most of his ATP Tour wins at Queen's and will look to be the Brit reigning supreme on Tuesday against a player that he likely idolised growing up.
Following that is the start of Aryna Sabalenka's tournament. The World No.2 takes Centre Court billing over World No.1 in the ATP, Carlos Alcaraz.
She will face Panna Udvardy on what is her return to Wimbledon after crying last year as she was banned due to the ongoing war.
But will aim to make up for lost time on a surface she has form for doing well on previously but not in this version of Aryna Sabalenka. A statement could be made.
Alcaraz, Jabeur, Thiem-Tsitsipas among outer court attractions
Court One sees Alcaraz despite being lauded pre tournament after his Queen's win and being World No.1 start first on Tuesday afternoon.
Also interestingly the final stand likely of Jeremy Chardy which makes it a slightly puzzling decision to head onto Court One.
Ons Jabeur as last year's finalist also starts on Court One, as Cameron Norrie also doesn't receive the Brit love as he faces Tomas Machac on Court One.
A must watch clash between Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas, former multiple champion Petra Kvitova and Daniil Medvedev are among those on Court Two.
Further out, Holger Rune, Alexander Zverev, Maria Sakkari, Madison Keys, Paula Badosa all begin their campaigns.
As does Mirra Andreeva and Ben Shelton on their first appearances on grass in a Grand Slam, the future starts now and they are among those on outer courts.
