Q. What does Wimbledon mean to Russia? Is it big over there? Just in terms of the part it plays in culture. VICTORIA AZARENKA: You do know I'm not from Russia, right? LOL
Both Russians and Belarusians were banned from last year's Wimbledon, but one journalist seemed to confuse the two in Victoria Azarenka.
Azarenka, a Belarusian and a big recognizable name in the sport returned after last year's ban with an opening win but was forced to correct a journalist who asked about the part Wimbledon plays in Russian culture.
"What does Wimbledon mean to Russia? Is it big over there? Just in terms of the part it plays in culture," the journalist said.
To which Azarenka said the following: "You do know I'm not from Russia, right?"
A real press conference gaffe to start off the latest Grand Slam.
This after Azarenka sealed victory on her return to Wimbledon after missing last year's tournament.
She took down Yue Yuan 4-6, 7-5, 4-6 and the two-time Grand Slam champion will face Nadia Podoroska on Wednesday.
It also snaps some poor form as of late from Azarenka who went out early in Berlin, Den Bosch, and also suffered early exits at the French Open after starting the season with a run to the semi-finals in Australia.
