The ATP
Hong Kong Open is set to celebrate its 28th edition, reviving a tournament steeped in tradition since the inception of the Open Era. However, it hasn't been played since the 2002 season, a year in which the champion was the former world No. 1 and current coach of Carlos Alcaraz, Juan Carlos Ferrero. Other notable champions include former world No. 1 players Jimmy Connors (1979), Ivan Lendl (1980), Pete Sampras (1993, 1996), Andre Agassi (1999), and Marcelo Rios (2001). The most successful player in the tournament's history is Michael Chang, securing three titles in 1994, 1995, and 1997 (along with two runner-up finishes).
With the
changes introduced by the ATP, there will be a slight variation in the points
distribution compared to previous years. In the quarterfinals, points have
increased from 45 last year to 50 points for 2024. Similarly, semifinalists
have seen an increase from earning 150 points to 165 for the new season, and
the runner-up has elevated from 150 to 165 points.
