Rafael
Nadal will participate in the ATP 250
Qatar Open, scheduled to take place
between February 19-25, 2024. The Spanish player seems to be on track with his
recovery to return to high-level competition and will aim to replicate his
early-year form in Doha.
The
22-times Grand Slam champion made his comeback at the Brisbane International,
securing two solid victories against Dominic Thiem and Jason Kubler. However,
he was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Jordan Thompson, despite having a
match point opportunity.
Nadal
expressed his concern about a minor muscle issue he experienced during the
match in Brisbane, stating, “During my last match in Brisbane I had a small
problem on a muscle that, as you know, made me worried,” in a message posted on
his Instagram.
Nadal's health update
Rafa Nadal
reported a new injury, leading to his withdrawal from the Australian Open.
However, he confirmed that the injury is not of long duration, and he will make
a prompt return to the Tour, which is set to happen in Doha. Nadal stated,
“Right now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in five
sets matches. I’m flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get some treatment and
rest.”
“Once I got
to Melbourne I have had the chance to make an MRI and I have a micro tear on a
muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury and that’s good news,”
former world No. 1 stated.
Nevertheless,
Nadal's plan for his comeback was to gain momentum in the early months of the
year, aiming to reach peak form and physical condition for the upcoming clay
season. He expressed, “I have worked very hard during the year for this
comeback, and as I always mentioned, my goal is to be at my best level in three
months.”
“Within the
sad news for me for not being able to play in front of the amazing Melbourne
crowds, this is not very bad news and we all remain positive with the evolution
for the season.
“I really
wanted to play here in Australia and I have had the chance to play a few
matches that made me very happy and positive. Thanks all for the support and
see you soon!”
