Spain’s legendary tennis star
Rafael Nadal has revealed that
he is unsure of playing the singles match in the
Davis Cup. The 38-year-old is
regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis in the
singles category, having won as many as 22 Grand Slam titles in his illustrious
career.
Nadal, who has struggled with fitness concerns, especially
in the latter stages of his career and missed six Grand Slams in the last two
years, announced earlier this year that he will retire from professional tennis
after participating in the upcoming Davis Cup, where he will be representing
his country, Spain, in the quarterfinal against the Netherlands. It was reported
in the media that the team captain David Ferrer has asked the former world
number one to be ready to face Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp in the
singles category.
Nadal, who recently participated in the Six Kings Slam event
in Saudi Arabia, has talked to the media as per the English media outlet
Daily Express, where he revealed that he is trying to be fit for the upcoming
event. The legendary tennis star, who is also regarded as the ‘King of Clay’
after winning the Roland Garros 14 times, further went on to state that he
would consider skipping the event if he is not fully fit to take part in it.
“Emotionally, I'm sure I'll be ready. Physically and in
terms of tennis level, there remains a month left to prepare,” he said while
talking about his upcoming singles clash against Van de Zandschulp. “I will try
to be in good shape to help the team to win. If I don't feel ready for the
singles, I'll be the first one to say. Be 100 per cent sure, I will not be on
court if I don't feel ready to win my match.”
