Rafael Nadal created some more Roland Garros history by triumphing once more (14th time) and extending his total tally to 22 defeating Ruud 6-3 6-3 6-0.
Nadal now has a decisive lead over Novak Djokovic in the number of total grand slam triumphs with 22 overall. He took advantage of a very uninspired Ruud who played one of his worst matches in a while in the final to lift another trophy in Paris. It was a solid match from Nadal but he did not need to produce a spectacular level. He took what was offered and there was plenty to choose from.
Breaking Ruud early in the opening set Nadal got the break and he never looked back. There were some mistakes but for the most part, he simply continued playing well taking advantage of some poor shot-selection by Ruud to win it 6-3. In the 2nd set, Nadal fell behind 1-3 after a slow start but then he went on to win five straight games to win the 2nd set with 6-3.
Ruud simply failed to problem-solve in real-time against Nadal who was able to. To be fair, Ruud did not offer much variety and Nadal did plenty of damage with his forehand. He also served better overall and that's a battle that Ruud needed to win.
He did not and it was a problem all match long. He tried to compensate by being aggressive but he had more errors than mistakes and that was too much to overcome. Nadal made it 10 games in a row taking a 5-0 lead in the final set and finishing it off with 6-0. An incredible run of 11 games in a row for Nadal who demonstrated that he was much better today.
