Spain’s
legendary tennis star
Rafael Nadal’s
US Open winning shirt was sold for $72,000. The 38-year-old is often regarded as one of the greatest players
in the history of men’s tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 22 Grand
Slam titles.
As per the recent report, Nadal’s shirt, which he wore during his US Open triumphs, was sold for more than $70,000. The Spaniard wore the shirt back in the 2010 even in New
York where he got the better of the Sebia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic
with a score 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the final. It was his first US Open title in
his career. After that, Nadal lifted the title three more times — in 2013, 2017
and 2019.
Nadal recently participated in the Paris Olympics, where he participated in both the singles and doubles categories. In the singles category, he was knocked out in the second round after
losing to Djokovic in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4. In the doubles
category, he and his partner Carlos Alcaraz lost in the quarterfinal to the
American pair of Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek in straight sets with a score
of 6-2, 6-4.
Nadal has struggled
with fitness concerns in the recent past. It was because of this reason he ended
up missing three out of four Grand Slams last year. During his time off the
court, the Spaniard announced that he retire from the sport at the end of the
2024 season. The former world number returned to the court earlier this year but
has not been able to continue producing positive results consistently.
He suffered
an injury during the Brisbane International which forced him to withdraw from
the Australian Open. Out of the three Grand Slams this year, he has only
managed to play in the French Open where he was knocked out after losing in the
first round to Germany’s Alexander Zverev in straight sets.
