After a phenomenal season prior, a freak injury which ripped away
Alex de Minaur's Wimbledon dream seems to have halted his return to the court at the
Cincinnati Open. He is the latest withdrawal on Friday afternoon.
De Minaur seemed to suffer a hip injury when he won on match point against Arthur Fils at Wimbledon earlier this summer. He booked a clash with a certain Novak Djokovic and was looking good prior to that incident to push him.
But despite his best efforts, he had to withdraw from the tie handing Djokovic a walk-over as a result into the semi-finals as the Serbian reached the final in a losing effort to Carlos Alcaraz.
It seemed though that this incident had lasting damage with De Minaur all set to represent Australia at the Olympic Games in both singles and doubles. But he only played with Alexei Popyrin in a losing first round effort.
He had withdrawn prior from the singles draw as he wasn't ready after his injury and now he seems to even be a doubt for the US Open. He has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open which begins on August 12 due to injury with Alexander Bublik also out at the same time. It is in the same 24 hours in which Novak Djokovic has also decided against playing albeit seemingly in a similar move to the last Olympic Games and one motivated by his gold medal as opposed to injury.
It means for De Minaur, unless he plays Winston-Salem he will not play again before the US Open and will go in cold ahead of the latest Grand Slam as injuries seem to be stacking up for a multitude of top names going into the latter half of 2024.
