Jack Draper defeated Dominic Thiem 6-1 6-4 in straight sets for the quarterfinal in Winston-Salem and the Brit will now enter the top 50.
It comes during what is a breakout season for Draper who will make his top 50 debut on Monday ahead of the US Open. He's been playing ell on most surfaces this year despite clay being his weakest one by far. Against Theim, he started well and singled out that as an important part of his victory:
“I started confidently, I started well. I was hitting through the ball, felt good in the conditions. It was a difficult start because I felt like everyone was supporting Dominic and I knew that I needed to come out confidently and sharp, and that’s what I did.”
The 2nd set was much harder for Draper as Theim found his rhythm a bit more and came up with some amazing winners. Draper was able to navigate that and keep the win in straight sets admitting after that it was an honour to share the court with Thiem:
“I was really good behind serve, really solid. In the second set it was tough because he was coming up with some amazing shots. It was a real honour to be on court with Dominic. He’s an amazing player.”
