Daniil Medvedev, after his marathon run in Melbourne, is withdrawing from ATP 500 Rotterdam, where he is reigning champion. “He is not ready to compete yet” says his agent Olli van Lindonk.
Daniil Medvedev will not play the ABN AMRO Open (Rotterdam Open) and defend his title between 12-18 February, 2024 with the Australian Open finalist deciding to withdraw due to the toll that the run took on his body.
Medvedev's run at the Australian Open was full of five setters. In the final, Jannik Sinner came from two sets down to hand him more final heartbreak as he won 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Previous to that, he came from two sets down himself to defeat Alexander Zverev and was also forced to play five against Hubert Hurkacz and Emil Ruusuvuori. He is synonymous with the ABN AMRO and said in his statement that he will return in 2025.
Currently, Jannik Sinner after withdrawing from Open 13 Provence in Marseille is still involved and will be the top seed alongside Andrey Rublev and Holger Rune. But whether the field will be further dented will remain to be seen. At the very least, they have lost Medvedev.
"Unfortunately I have to pull out of Rotterdam," said Medvedev. "After an incredibly tough and long run in Australia my body (and especially my right foot) is not recovered enough yet to play come and defend my title."
"I love playing in Rotterdam, have a long history with the event and look forward to coming back in 2025."
