American tennis player
Reilly Opelka has withdrawn from the
Brisbane International. The first competition in the ATP calendar of the 2024 season
will begin on December 29.
Opelka, who has not played for a while because of fitness
concerns, has decided to withdraw from the competition. The recent development is
another setback for the 26-year-old who has not played any professional tennis
for more than a year because of multiple injuries.
It was expected that he would make a much-anticipated return to the court at the start of the year but as per the latest report, he will not
going to be taking the court at least in Brisbane. It is not clear why he decided
to take such action.
Opelka’s fans will be hoping that the recent development
will not going to prolong his absence from the court. The former world number
17 does not have a great record while playing at the highest level.
He has played in the main round of the Grand Slams 15 times
but never managed to play in the quarterfinal or beyond. The best outing for
the Michigan-born came in the US Open in 2021 when he was knocked out after
losing the fourth-round tie to South Africa’s Lloyd Harris with a score of 6-7,
6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
