Frances
Tiafoe's defeat further solidified Zverev's return to the top 10 post-US Open.
The German
tennis player had a tough 2022 after his injury in the French Open semifinals
during the match against Rafael Nadal. 'Sascha' Zverev was displaying his best
form and was a real threat to the Spaniard.
The ankle
injury sidelined him for the rest of the season, causing him to drop out of the
top 10 after 273 weeks. In 2023, he gradually regained his form and secured his
first victory against a top-10 player just three weeks ago, defeating Daniil
Medvedev in the Cincinnati Open round of 16.
Zverev's
confidence has propelled him to the quarterfinals of the
US Open for the third
consecutive time (he did not participate in 2022 due to his knee injury). His
best result at Flushing Meadows was in the 2020 final against Dominic Thiem.
He is
currently ranked as World No. 12 and is not defending any points, guaranteeing
him 360 points that will take him back to the top 10 after more than 9 months.
Zverev was closely trailing Frances Tiafoe, Alex de Minaur, and Tommy Paul in
the race for World No. 10, and the results have favored Zverev.
While De
Minaur and Paul were eliminated in the fourth round, Tiafoe lost in the
quarterfinals and couldn't defend the points from his previous semifinal,
ensuring Zverev's return to the top 10.
The only
player left at the US Open who is behind Zverev in the rankings is Ben Shelton.
However, even if the American were to win the title, he would have no chance of
overtaking 'Sascha.'
The German
will face World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals after causing an
upset in the fourth round against World No. 6 Jannik Sinner, who was considered
the favorite in the match. Zverev has a 3-2 head-to-head record against Alcaraz
in their previous encounters.
